チャンドラ・ウィクラマシンゲ（Chandra Wickramasinghe）

彗星パンスペルミア説の第一人者、チャンドラ・ウィクラマシンゲ（Chandra Wickramasinghe）についてご紹介です。

略歴

物理学者、数学者。

1939年1月20日、スリランカの首都コロンボに生まれる。

1960年、コロンボ大学数学部を卒業後、第1回の英連邦奨学生としてケンブリッジ大学に留学。そこでサー・フレッド・ホイル博士と出会い、40年に及ぶ共同研究を開始する。

1960年代に星間物質(星間微粒子)の組成が炭素である事(星間減光の観測値と直径0.1マイクロメートルの炭素粒子の一致)を証明。星間微粒子が氷でも無機化合物でも無生物的有機化合物でもなく、主に生物及びその分解生成物(例えば石炭のような)であるという「生物モデル」や、宇宙から彗星に乗って地球へ細菌やウイルスのような微生物が飛来してくるという「彗星パンスペルミア説」、またそこから発展した「ウイルス進化論」（彗星によって地球に運ばれて来たウイルスが、地球に先に到達した単純な形態をした生命体に遺伝子を挿入(内在性レトロウイルス等)した結果、単純な生命体からより複雑な生命体へと生命が分化したという仮説）など数々の新説を打ち立て、アストロバイオロジー(宇宙生物学)の進展に大きく寄与した。
